They call this kind of woman a "Christmas Cake" that has expired and isn't desirable, as it is after the 25th and it still hasn't been purchased. There is a saying that 25 is considered the tipping point where a woman is worthless if she hasn't already found a man. Japan is a lot more shallow about age then US/english culture is. You'd think if the gap was quite so large, it would come up in conversation. Kawakami never makes a big deal about the age difference between the main character and herself, instead her anxieties focus on the teacher/student dynamic as being the sole thing that makes her uncomfortable. If she was anywhere near 34, they would be more likely mistaken for mother and son instead. She's young enough that it doesn't look out of place for her to be mistaken for honeymooning with Joker in Hawaii. Since I've already seen people elsewhere give Kawakami's age some thought, I'd share their conclusion that she's closer to 26 or so.
